An existing 7-storeyed school building was broken down and renovated in multiple phases to manage ongoing school activities through changing COVID-19 protocols. The new design was conceptualized after understanding the existing functionality, space planning issues faced by the teaching and non-teaching staff, and the student age groups occupying the building through primary and secondary research. Spaces like libraries, eating spaces, collaborative corridors, STEM labs, play areas, classrooms according to grades, Sports courts, etc. were designed and detailed. The site being a renovation site posed multiple issues regarding re-routing electrical, HVAC services, material waste, etc and were dealt with meetings and discussions with relevant agencies. The clients and the school board were active participants throughout the design and on site execution phases, and the process as a result, although invited many on site design changes as the site progressed, also became positively specific, and focused towards every age group and function, ensuring a better user experience for the users.
The classroom walls were demolished and restructured to create L-shaped classrooms with openings for more visual interactions. The corridors with additional openings with the same L orientation on the opposite side of the corridor provide a beautiful visual. The corridors for the 10th graders have multiple seating orientations for discussions
Co-working spaces for tenth graders complies with typologies of spaces necessitated by the IB board like reading niches, private working pods, discussion areas, etc. in an innovative manner in terms of forms, spatial connections, colours, and other design elements.
